Papers, 1788-1796.

These volumes record an interesting story of captivity in the Barbary states. The first volume covers the period 17 May 1788 to 26 May 1788 and is followed by brief "essays" recounting significant events that occurred during his captivity, as well as describing slavery in Algiers. Copies of Cathcart's correspondence are also included. The second manuscript volume, entitled "A Journal of the particulars of the Negotiations between the United States of America and the Regency of Algiers Continued from the departure of Captain Richard O'Brien September the 11th 1795," is composed of diary entries and correspondence, much of it with David Humphreys and Joel Barlow. Late in Cathcart's life he used these documents as the basis for a long autobiographical narrative which was edited and published by his daughter, Mrs. Jane B. Newkirk, under the title _The Captives_. The text of the book includes not only additional material probably based on Cathcart's memory, but also reflects his daughter's bowdlerization.
